Má Reputação

Este simpático réptil é uma das duas espécies de geckos que ocorrem no território continental português e, ao contrário da crença popular, não são venenosos nem provocam qualquer doença dermatológica. Por se alimentarem de várias espécies de artrópodes como moscas, mosquitos, traças e aranhas, são até bastante benéficas ao ser humano.

Nas noites quentes de verão é fácil encontrá-las a patrulhar muros ou paredes banhadas por algum tipo de luz artificial que atraia os insectos e, com alguma paciência, conseguimos aproximar-nos o suficiente para que possamos apreciá-las sem que as perturbemos. Embora algumas pessoas as considerem repugnantes, um olhar atento facilmente perceberá os pormenores que fazem delas um dos répteis mais bonitos que existem no nosso país.

O animal da foto era um juvenil com cerca de 5 cm e foi extremamente tolerante à minha aproximação.

This cute reptile is one of the two species of geckos that occur in the Portuguese mainland and, contrary to popular belief, is neither poisonous nor cause any dermatological disease. By feeding on various species of arthropods like flies, mosquitoes, moths and spiders, they are quite beneficial to humans.

 

On hot summer nights it is easy to find them patrolling walls bathed by some artificial light that attracts insects and, with some patience, we can get close enough so that we can enjoy them without disturbing. Although some people find them repugnant, a close look will easily see the details that make them one of the most beautiful reptiles in Portugal.

 

The animal in the photo was a juvenile about 5 cm long and was extremely tolerant to my approach.
